Knowledge of the system Earth

Documents and Links

One of the main objectives of GEOSS is an improved monitoring of the state of the earth.
This is indispensable for an improved understanding of the Earth system and its dynamic processes
It is also an indispensable condition for the monitoring of international environmental agreements.
GEOSS supports the UN framework convention on climate change (UNFCCC) and its goal to mitigate anthropogenic disturbances of the global climate system. Better knowledge through modern earth observation methods is essential for informed political decisions.

The necessary measures for the improvement of the global climatic observation were compiled by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). GEO will work to support their implementation.
GEOSS thus forms an important contribution to a more comprehensive understanding of the climate system of the earth as a prerequisite for adequate mitigation of and adaptation to forthcoming climate changes.
